During his hiatus between albums, Beck has found an interesting and entertaining way to keep himself busy. Among other things, produce on the new Charlotte Gainsborough record, IRM due out in the US in early 2010. Beck has also begun a side project with a variety of other artists called the Record Club. As a visual artist it reminds me of an impromptu figure session, an opportunity for artists of any medium to flex their creative muscles and challenge themselves in a classical tradition from a live model. In his own words below he describes the concept and premise behind this club.
"Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens."
